Other athletes die while training or during a routine workout. Some die for no reason at all like the rest of us. However, we like to think that they are the fittest of us all and thus immune to some of the tragedies of life. Steve Larsen, probably the only professional who competed and won major races as a mountain biker, road biker and triathlete, died last night. He collapsed during a track run.

Steve and his wife have five children. He was only 39! Since he was on a track others were around and gave CPR but that and in spite of the ambulance coming quickly he died. It seems he had a heart attack.

He was from California where he had operated a bike shop called Steve Larsen's Wheelworks before he got involved in the sport. In 2003 he retired from sports and and opened a real estate agency in Bend, Oregon. He finished 7th last year in the Ironman World Championships.

My heart goes out to the Larsen family.
