I don't know if you watched Oprah yesterday but as a former Social Worker the lack of fitness of parenting and how parents and kids fall through the cracks appalls me but at the same time if you knew the ratio of social workers to cases you would be appalled.
It is no wonder that we have children who will never have a chance to play soccer, go to ballet classes, and really understand what it feels like to be strong and healthy.
Still the case of Dani, the feral child, is not closed. She has made progress since she was found at the age of 7 years old living in a diaper weighing 46 pounds. She couldn't chew or swallow solid food. She looked like a mental challenged baby.
She was cleaned up and the lice and other bugs were removed from her. She has been diagnosed with environmental autism. Her brain scans all showed normal waves.
This little girl, Danielle, certainly has angels with her. A family saw her picture on a wall at an adoption fair and knew she belonged to them. Diane, Bernie, William 10, and and four other brothers from previous marriages not only took her in but the Lierows adopted her and love her. Dani has made some progress though she still is developmentally between one to three years of age. But she has activities. She gets to go outside. She gets nourishing food. This little girls had none of these things before. She lived in one room, never seeing daylight, never having anyone love her, hold her or talk to her. This should never happen. There is help - everywhere. If you cannot take care of your child leave him or her at a hospital or police station. The problem in this case and so many others is that the parent(s) don't know that they are not fit or that their child is being abused. In too many cases the children are rescued too late.
There are excellent articles around if this is of interest to you. One is at Tampa Bay.com and of course at Oprah.com where you can also read an excerpt of The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog. This little boy spent years in a cage!
Every state has a Department of Social Services. There is also a national service at Health & Human Services.
