I watched The Oprah show today. She had on Dr. Oz along with Long-term CR (calorie restriced) society member Joe Cordell, Paul McGlothin and Meredith Averill, also appeared on thisshow called Extreme Life Extension." Dr. Oz thinks has the capability of being the first person who lives to be 100 years old. He is 5' 10" and weight 130 pounds. 80% of his diet is raw.
Dr. Oz concurred with research that has been done that calorie restriction does slow down the aging process. The primary reason is very simple: our bodies become very efficient when they work on fewer calores. Mr. McGlothin spoke from Skypes. At 61 he said he has more energy than ever and his eye sight has reverted back to 20/20. The confusing part for me was Ms. Averill's calorie intake. She said she takes in about 1600 calories a day which isn't a restriced calorie diet for a woman in my opinion.
For breakfast Joe Cordell eats the peels from 3 apples, blueberries, raspberries and 2 grams of walnuts (healthy fat). For lunch he has a very large salad with kale, carrots and other raw veggies. He eats 1950 calories a day
The goal of Calorie Restriction is to achieve a longer and healthier life by eating fewer calories and consuming adequate vitamins and other nutrients.
"Extensive scientific research has shown that a CR diet improves the health and extends the lifespan of every species so far tested, including worms, spiders, rodents, dogs, cows and monkeys. We believe that people who adopt a CR diet will see the same results longer life and better health."(Source)
Dr. Oz made it clear that you should clear a CR diet with your doctor and that the risk is that you won't get enough calcium, iron, etc. This is where a multi-vitamin would be helpful.
