When I was in college I could hardly read The Bell Jar. It was that anxiety provoking for me.
This was Sylvia Plath's only novel originally published in 1963 under the name Victoria Lucas. It is semi-autobiographical with the lead character's downward spiral into mental health paralleling her own path. She killed herself a month after the book's first publication. Her son was just a little over a year when she died. The novel was published under Plath's name for the first time in 1966.
So as a former Social Worker and person who deeply believes in the mind/body connection and that nature and nurture go hand in hand I wasn't at all surprised to read that Plath's son, Nicholas Hughes, committed suicide on March 16.
Nicholas, 47, was a professor of fisheries and ocean sciences at the University of Alaska, in Fairbanks but had left that position to pursue his passion for pottery at home.
Professor Hughes had suffered from depression for a long time. Please there is so much help out for depression and other disorders. There is no need for anyone to be in mental anguish and pain - get help! I hope Nicholas did not die without helping someone out there who is reading this and feels like committing suicide.
