I can ride my bike to the grocery store; however, not easily. I urge everyone who lives in areas with bike lanes to use your bikes to save money among other things during this time of economic trouble.
I think biking is a super and fun way toward fitness. It doesn't take mountain biking and it doesn't take challenging hills. Just hop on a bike in your neighborhood of bike trail and enjoy the sites. I love to see children in a baby seat or being pulled by an attachment on their own bike or being pulled in a wheeled carrier. It just looks like so much fun for everybody.
Since our children are grown our 5-year old Pomeranian is our baby. She has been riding and hiking in her Pet Pocket since she was a baby. She loves it and jumps for joy when we take it out.
A few years back my husband and I upgraded to bikes with 21 speeds. They were not expensive - a little more than $300 - and they get me up hills that I would not be able to get otherwise. Having said that if I had to do it over I would get a bike with thin wheels which would be much lighter and faster than my hybrid. We ride Specialized Expeditions and used Specialized Helmets.
Please remember to bring plenty of water, have a first aid kit, have basic tools, wear helmets, and make sure if you have long pant on that the right leg is tight (I use Velcro) so it doesn't get caught on the pedal.
During our last biking outing I took pictures of how we end our biking trips. I think you'll enjoy looking at my slide show.
I have no financial interest in these bikes.
