I am a faithful Oprah watcher. I watched her as she’s watched herself become a size 10. That was 20 years ago when she went on a potential life threatening liquid diet. Once again she is up to 200 pounds. Yo Yo dieting is bad for our health and bodies. We know that; however, food like many other substances is an addiction that is hard to kick. For Oprah perhaps it is even harder because she is seen on TV every day and is a role model to women. Perhaps she should accept her heavier weight? Is that something I am recommending? No I am not because I am one of those people who do not believe fat people can be healthy. I will duck the tomatoes, but I stand firm on that ground.

Associated Press reported today that in the upcoming January issue of O magazine Oprah will tell her viewers that she is not living a healthy lifestyle. Oprah herself doesn’t feel she can be 200 pounds and healthy.

Oprah has the best minds working with her. She knows all there is to know about weight loss yet it happened. No one could stop her at 175 pounds and say enough. Oprah is 54 years old. This is a time when the best of us struggle with weight gain. The fact is our metabolism slows down and our hormones go wacky. She also has a thyroid problem which made her afraid to work out. As a former Social Worker I would say that she’s using her thyroid as an excuse. Oprah hates to work out. She certainly has doctors who can tell her how to work out. Thyroid conditions don’t preclude some kind of exercise thus she has gained 40 pounds in the last 2 years.

The cycle goes on as many of you know. You eat, get mad at yourself ,and eat some more. You fall off the wagon and say you’ll get back on right after the next weekend.

Interestingly Oprah Winfrey now wants to be healthy and strong. Being thin is not her goal and I say finally! The goal to be thin is a goal that most of us won’t achieve and shouldn’t want to. It is society getting the best of us. Of course if you are a runway model making 1 million dollars a year being too thin for a few years may be worth it (or not). The average woman or man should not be striving for thin.

Oprah will be presenting “Best Life Week” on her show starting January 5, 2009. In the O magazine article you will read that when she didn’t want to see her good friends, Cher and Tina Turner, in Las Vegas she knew she was in trouble. You know the routine – you don’t want to go to your high school reunion because you’ve gained weight.

Oprah's body mass index at 31.8, which is obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says people who are obese are "at higher risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol." AP Personally I don’t like the body mass index but that’s another article; however, we really don’t need this measure to know she is obese.

Oprah hasn’t unveiled her new way to lose weight. She’s tried everything including having a personal psychologist, Dr. Phil, on call. So what can Oprah do?

I agree that she shouldn’t diet. If a diet worked there would not be thousands of diet book and plans on the market. I agree she should eat healthfully. She should eat 6 small meals a day. Oprah must cut out all white foods. I would suggest that she cut out gluten (wheat) and substitute wheat with amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa, and millet. I would suggest she spend some time at a healthy resort where she will be served these types of food. She’ll lose 10 pounds pretty quickly which will give her the psychological boost to continue on. Oprah must and can find some type of exercise she likes. Initially she should start walking. She then should incorporate light weights. She does not have to work out for 2 hours a day. Once she loses weight she may want to do exercises in her pool and try Yoga.

I love Oprah. I think she is an amazing woman and I am rooting for her because I want her to be around for a long, long, time.
