Yes it's starting to get hot and it's about that time to hit the beach! During this past 4th of July weekend I hit up one of my favorite beaches in town (purely because of the pay $7 for all day parking situation) - Zuma Beach. Starving for food (and no restaurant in sight), the only thing that was available was the food shack at Zuma. And let me tell you - unless you're desperate for food, don't come here.
I unfortunately forgot to bring food with me since I hadn't anticipated the 3 hours it would take to get to Zuma (on the particular day I went) since there was a lot of traffic and it was hard to find parking. Dizzy, a little nauseous and almost to the verge of passing out - I decided to hit up the food shack since well, it couldn't be that bad, could it?
Walking up to the counter, I asked the guy what was good - and he mentioned (in a monotone voice, that should have been my first sign) "the chicken burrito. yeah it's good" (me - "really?"; him - "yeah. they are good" in monotone and unenthusiastic voice). So, I opted for a chicken burrito since I wasn't in the mood for a fried chicken sandwich, pizza or a hot dog.
The food at the shack is really cheap - almost everything is about $5 so you won't have to break the bank eating here. When my burrito came (and it only took about 2 minutes) it was a really decent size and I thought "well, okay this could be alright." At first bite, I soon realized what was a "burrito" was a "fried chicken wrap" (putting something in a tortillla does NOT make it a burrito) and the fried chicken was a little cold and not the good kind of fried chicken. The fried chicken definately tasted frozen or cheap or something - but it wasn't tasty. The lettuce was a little limp and the cheese was cold - not melted at all. I ended up forgoing my taste buds for my sanity - I was desperate for food and knew if I didn't eat this - I probably would not be able to make the car ride home. After the "burrito" I was tempted to maybe try to order something else but figured why waste my money if this was the quality of the "really good burrito?" So in all - I say if you aren't smart like I wasn't and don't bring food to the beach - only hit up the food shack in the most dire of situations or else try to save your energy and find an actual place on the street.
Final Thoughts:
Overall: A good location for those that don't want to travel far for a little sustenance on the beach
Atmosphere: A typical (yet small) food shack on the beach - complete with unenthusiastic workers
