Did you know that arguably THE great American writer, Mark Twain, had strong connections to Buffalo?
Mark Twain's wife, Olivia Langdon, was born in Elmira, NY in 1845. The two met in New York City, where Twain attended a reading by Charles Dickens with Langdon's family. Not only was Twain a legendary writer, he got to meet such other legends as Frederick Douglass, Theodore Roosevelt, and Mahatma Ghandi. It seems that Dickens and Twain would have never needed marketing.
Clemens married Olivia Langdon in Elmira on February 2, 1870. The couple settled in Buffalo, NY, where Twain became a partial owner of newspaper Buffalo Express. The Twains' first child, Langdon Clemens, was born in Buffalo. Their second child, Olivia Susan, was born in 1872, in Elmira, the same year Langdon died, and Clara Langdon was born in Elmira in 1874.
The couple only lived in Buffalo for two years, but Twain blessed Buffalo with the original manuscript of Huckleberry Finn, which can be found today at The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library in The Mark Twain Room. It also houses a collection of special editions and artifacts including a bookcase from Twain's house in Buffalo. The room is open to the public during regular library hours.
