Making history with her hit Showtime show The L Word, Ilene Chaiken is no stranger to the screen big or small. Although most well-known for writing, directing and producing the groundbreaking lesbian drama, she also had her hands in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Barb Wire, Dirty Pictures and is currently working on the upcoming CW show Confessions of a Back Up Dancer.
The first time she pitched the L Word to Showtime she got no response, but persistence paid off for this Elkins Park, PA native. She teamed up with Rose Troche on the show and the two of them had no idea what to expect. They weren't even sure if the show was going to be successful.
The show has even given birth to its own social networking site Our Chart, which aims to promote LGBT pop culture, news and events. The L Word was the longest running lesbian themed drama in the history of television.
Ilene received the GLAAD Davidson/Valentini award in May of 2008, which is awarded to an openly LGBT media professional that has made a huge difference in promoting equal rights for the community.
