Add another several thousand folks to the U.S. unemployment rolls as jobs news continues to be bleak. AT&T said today it would cut 12,000 jobs, some 4 percent of its work force, beginning this month and continuing through next year.
AT&T, the nation's largest telecom, did not detail where the cuts would take place. It did say it would continue to hire workers in its cell phone and broadband divisions.
In a statement, the company pointed out that much of its non-management staff has jobs guaranteed through union contracts. It also said any laid-off workers would get severance "in accordance with management policies or union agreements."
