Some well-known U.S. businesses announced job cuts Monday, with hundreds more workers joining the rapidly swelling ranks of the unemployed across the country.
Aircraft manufacturer Cessna said it sent out 60-day layoff notices to workers in Wichita, Kan., and Bend, Ore. The company last month said it would cut 500 jobs in Wichita and 165 in Bend, though it said some 150 workers have accepted a voluntary buyout package.
In Seattle, more than 2,000 workers at Washington Mutual Bank received layoff notices, with most of the affected employees at the company's headquarters in downtown Seattle. Representatives of WaMu's new owner, JP Morgan Chase, are speaking with WaMu workers today.
Beverage maker Gatorade said it would lay off another 87 workers at a plant in Pryor, Okla. Those cuts come just more than a month after Gatorade laid off 22 workers at the same facility. The plant, run by PepsiCo-OTG, opened in March. Workers there make Gatorade and Propel Fitness Water drinks.
In Illinois, the state government laid off more than 80 workers and closed some 20 state parks and historical sites. Reports say the state is more than $4 billion behind in payments to vendors and others.
