How bad was the jobs picture in October? Look at some of these numbers (stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics):

2,140 - number of "mass layoff actions" (a mass layoff is one affecting at least 50 workers), the most in October since October 2001 - the month following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks

232,468 - number of U.S. workers let go in October

1,742,914 - number of initial claims for unemployment benefits in the U.S. from January through October, the most for that 10-month period since 2002

Here are the industries with the most layoffs in October:

  • Temporary help services - 16,381
  • Automobile manufacturing - 10,508
  • Professional employer organizations - 7,242
  • Motion picture and video production - 6,052
  • Light truck and utility vehicle manufacturing - 6,047
  • Farm labor contractors and crew leaders - 4,123
  • Heavy duty truck manufacturing - 3,983
  • Discount department stores - 3,135
  • Fruit and vegetable canning - 2,836
  • Travel trailer and camper manufacturing - 2,826

Layoffs were most prevalent in these states:

  • California - 51,286
  • Ohio - 17, 764
  • Michigan - 16,851
