President-elect Barack Obama today outlined a plan to create jobs and help the nation's economy by rebuilding infrastructure, modernizing schools, and lessening dependence on foreign oil.
Obama wants to create 2.5 million jobs. He would focus on rebuilding the nation's roads and bridges, remodeling older schools, developing alternative energy sources, and producing more efficient cars.
He said legislation backing his plan would be one of his first priorities after he takes office Jan. 20. He wants those new jobs created by January 2011.
The early days of his presidency (and perhaps longer) are likely to be defined by how Obama handles the current economic crisis. Wall Street is in turmoil, and the Labor Department this week reported that claims for unemployment benefits are at their highest level since July 1992.
"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis. These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long." - Obama, in the weekly Democratic radio address
Obama said he was pleased President Bush signed an extension of benefits for unemployed workers on Friday, and said getting Americans back to work is paramount for rebuilding the economy.
"We'll put people back to work rebuilding our crumbling roads and bridges, modernizing schools that are failing our children, and building wind farms and solar panels," he said. He also said fuel-efficient cars and alternative energy technologies are needed "that can free us from our dependence on foreign oil and keep our economy competitive in the years ahead."
