President Bush has signed a bill to extend unemployment benefits, doing so early today just before he left for Lima, Peru, to attend the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

The Senate approved the extension late Thursday.

The measure extends unemployment benefits for another seven weeks for those whose benefits have expired, and an additional 13 weeks for the unemployed in states where the unemployment rate is 6 percent or higher. The president initially was opposed to the extension but said recently he would support it due to the nation's rising unemployment.

The unemployed currently can qualify for up to 26 weeks of benefits.
