The K-box is about the size of an iPhone.

Imagine listening to your favorite tunes emanating from a wall, a table - even a window.

That's the premise behind the K-box from Kerchoonz. The company's Web site is "a social media platform promoting the free exchange of music, art, ideas and entertainment." The K-box uses patented Gel Audio Technology™ that gives a "true bass response" when it's placed on any solid, flat surface, such as a window, a table or a wall.

You start by plugging the K-box into a laptop or portable gaming system, a mobile phone or MP3 player, or even a television. Then you place the K-box on the flat surface, and the surface becomes the speaker.

The denser the object, the deeper the bass response.

Kerchoonz calls the K-box a hybrid speaker, with an interior speaker that brings the mid to high frequencies, and the Gel Audio Technology producing the bass.

According to Indiana Gregg, a recording artist and Kerchoonz.com co-founder: "The K-box is for music lovers who want quality portable sound. K-box utilizes surfaces to create the bass response that other portable speakers lack. K-box provides unmatched speaker sound, any place and any time, no matter what surface is available."

We haven't tested the K-box, but we certainly like the premise. Here are some specs:

  • The device is rubber-based and about the size of a mobile phone.
  • It has an average output performance of 95dB at 1m.
  • The bass performance varies depending on the surface, with output ranges between 40Hz-20Khz.
  • The device is recharged through a USB connection and can deliver up to 20 hours of use between charges.
