It's near, as in almost here - so keep an ear (and an eye as well) tuned to the news about 3D TV.
Rob Engle, a 3D visual effects supervisor for Sony Pictures Imageworks, gave the opening keynote Tuesday at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers' Tech Conference and Expo in Hollywood, Calif. Engle said gaming and sports would likely lead the charge for 3D programming.
"Imagine the Super Bowl in 3D," Engle said. (Side note - the Super Bowl and some other football already has been broadcast in 3D to a select audience in a test of the technology. I was among those who in January watched the BCS title game between Florida and Oklahoma at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Aside from audio issues, it was a great spectacle.) "It really is a new medium," Engle said. "If the technologists and consumer electronics makers come together to produce good content and present it in a good format, we really have the power to change how entertainment is perceived."
Some recent 3D movies have had success, particularly animated programs. And Engle said Avatar would bring "a lot of converts" to the format as well. Avatar is scheduled for a December release.
