During an interview with CNN, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele responded to Democratic National Committee accusations of scare tactics on the part of the Republican party. "When it comes to seniors and health care, there is no accounting for the track health care is on", said Mr. Steele. Mr. Steele stated that the Medicare system is on track to bankruptcy and questioned the feasibility of moving money from Medicare into another government-sponsored health program. Mr. Steele asked why the federal government shouldn't just focus on fixing Medicare.

The Democratic party has control of the process. According to Mr. Steele, by raising the issue about the effect reform will have on seniors, the Republican party is placing a marker in the debate by specifically seeking an accounting for what reform will mean to seniors. The Republican party believes that a vast majority of seniors will be pushed into a system that doesn't benefit them.
