As an artist and an avid recycler, I find a deep satisfaction when I can reuse or even invent a new purpose for an item destined for disposal. So I was really chuffed when I discovered that one of my favorite thrift stores, Thrifttown, not only has a website but it also has a page dedicated to ways customers and employees have gotten creative with things they've purchased in the store. Check it out - and if you've got a great idea of your own, Thrifttown gives away $25 gift certificates quarterly for cool ideas. They also have competitions throughout the year such as Best Dressed at the Prom; last year's winner - who proudly wore her $9.00 dress to her high school prom - won a $100 gift certificate and an Apple computer. Not too shabby.
There are four Thrifttowns in the metroplex. The one I patronize is on Westmoreland in Oak Cliff south of downtown Dallas. I love it because the employees seem invested in their work, it's clean, spacious and very neat. All the household goods - great for artists looking for something to "redo" - are thoughtfully displayed on shelves, not by product type such as cups, vases, candle holders, etc., but by color. Slightly odd, but I love it.
Thrifttown's even got it's own MySpace and Twitter page. If you discover any wonderful finds there, I'd love to hear about it.
