In a previous article, we drove the new Camaro with the base V-6 engine. Taken from the Cadillac CTS, this was a lively power-plant, putting out 304 horsepower and reaching 60 mpg in 6.3 seconds. Gas mileage was 22-30 mpg in the real world. But it was missing one thing -- that loud V-8 roar, something the old- school guys like me crave! So this time, we got the V-8 car.
The 6.2 liter engine cranks out 400 horsepower with the automatic gearbox, or 426 with the 6-speed manual, like I had. I hit 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The Ford GT-500 Mustang with 540 horsepower does it in 4.6 seconds, so we are in some quick company here. Gas mileage is rated at 16-24. I got 17 in mixed commuting.
In most cars, the handling improves if you turn off the traction control nannies. Not here. Hit the gas in a corner and that massive torque smokes the rear tires. Without traction control, you might spin off the road in a hurry. But with it on, this car corners very well. The price you pay is a firm bouncy ride, but you need a stiff suspension to handle all that power. The brakes work just fine.
The interior controls are very easy to understand and use, but the materials used in this cabin are cheap looking, not much better than what we see in the cheapie Chevy Aveo. But like the Corvette, the money is put in the drive-train where it is needed most.
The SS model comes standard with everything you need, including satellite radio. Its $33,430 tag is a bargain . . . so don’t expect much of a discount.
