Chances are, if you’re a Minnesotan that’s made a trek or two “Up North,” then you are more than likely familiar with the famous sites and stops: Canal Park in Duluth, Gooseberry Falls, Split Rock Lighthouse, Sven & Ole’s Pizza in Grand Marais, and the most famous of them all, Betty’s Pies in Two Harbors.
Since 1956, from its humble beginnings in a fish shack, Betty’s Pies has grown into a much beloved roadside diner that serves up some of the best comfort food, such as pasties and roasted chicken and of course their world renown and award winning pies. But you don’t have to wait for that summer trip, Betty’s Pies has expanded to the Twin Cities and is poised to grow to even more locations in town.
When the Baker’s Square chain of restaurants shut down in the Twin Cities metro area, there was a vacuum created as to where we could get all of our Holiday Pies, until Betty came to town. Baking over 400 pies daily, with fresh fruit and cream pies, there is bound to be a flavor that fits your fancy. Pumpkin pies and pecan pies are ready to be brought home, just in time for Thanksgiving. Perhaps you want to go the apple or berry route, an Apple Crunch pie or Bumbleberry pie will suit the bill. They’ve even taken the concept of pie-ala-mode and turned it up a notch with their Polar Pie shakes (Think DQ Blizzard, but rather than just bits of candy chunks, each shake contains a full slice of your favorite pie!)
Betty’s Pies & Eatery in the Twin Cities is located in Mahtomedi, right next door to White Bear Lake. Partners Carl Ehlenz and Marti Sieber recognized a need in the Twin Cities for really good comfort food and of course the pie. After years of persuading, and near begging from customers, the duo was convinced to come down to the cities where their pies can be savored all year long. If Mahtomedi still seems like a trip, don’t worry, pies can even be shipped (to just about anywhere in the world) or they can even be delivered in the Twin Cities. Just hop on their website www.bettyspies.com to order your slice of heaven.
