The new name for the beloved mainstay café at the corner of Hennepin and Lake has been revealed, or shall we say – the cat is out of the bag. Figlio will now be known as Il Gatto, Italian for “the cat”. Figlio ended its 25 year long run as the corner anchor of Calhoun Square in July to make way for a rebranded, reimaged, and renamed Il Gatto.
New signage is up on the side of the (also being remodeled) Calhoun Square. Parasole Restaurant Holdings also owns other neighborhood spots such as Chino Latino, Burger Jones, and a as of yet unnamed “Cocktail Bar” that will open in another space also in the new Calhoun Square. Parasole generated a bit of a buzz with teaser billboards in the Uptown Neighborhood and on T-shirts worn by the Figlio staff in the last few weeks of being open. Il Gatto will sport a “mostly Italian” menu and looks to open still in November of this year.
Figlio was a fan fave for over 25 years. Il Gatto will have it's work cut out to capture the same sentiment. I just hope there's no hairballs!
