Friday marked the release of the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the 1980's graphic comic book series"The Watchmen". While I am not here to discuss what I personally thought of the movie I will tell you what I thought of when it comes to the films soundtrack.
While I did see the movie Friday night I made sure to pay close attention to the songs that made their way through the almost three hour journey that is the Watchmen. I felt certain songs fit better than others but overall I felt pretty satisfied with the songs that were chosen to be involved in the film. One major bone I would have to pick is the fact that My Chemical Romance covered Bob Dylan's Desolation row and it was used during the movies end credits. While I have no problem with their style of music, I feel that having them practically ruin a classic was just a dumb mistake that really hurt the overall soundtrack. Also the inclusion of the song 99 luftballons just left me confused why that would have even been considered but I guess it wasn't really used in a major scene so no harm done.
Simon and Garfunkel's "Sound of silence" was used in the scene where the Comedian is laid to rest. The song perfectly depicts the character that the comedian portrays, a very abusive man that does unthinkable acts yet is an emotional wreck toward the end of his life when he comes to realize who he really has become and what the world truly means.
The classic Hallelujah is played while the second Silk Spectre and Night Owl are engaging in sex. In my opinion there is just something so simple about Cohen's version that makes the meaning shout out so much louder and its why I believe that every other version of the song falls well short of its original.
The Times they are A-changin finds its way into the film and rightfully so due to the fact that the whole story behind the Watchmen is the ever so changing period of the 1980's and the on going cold war discussions with theSoviets. Ride of the Valkyries was played during the Vietnam sequence where Dr. Manhattan is turning the Vietnamese soldiers into mush and ultimately leading the Americans to victory thus changing the landscape of the future.
Overall the soundtrack that made up the Watchmen fit almost perfectly to the direction that the movie and story was heading. If their were a few minor changes to a song or two then this would have been a really great soundtrack rather than a really good one. While going out and buying or downloading this album doesen't make sense due to the majority of music fans knowing or owning some of these classics already, I do encourage people to check the movie out and see what you think of the arraignment.
