Sunday night brought us the 51st annual Grammy Awards live from theStaples Center in Los Angeles California. While A lot of times award shows such as these get a hard knock against them for being too much of a popularity contest, I feel that Sundays show and award winners for the most part were all deserving.
Kicking off the show was U2 whom are getting to be a tad bit much these days. They played their new single "Get on Your Boots" which surely is not one of the bands best efforts. An early highlight was seeing Whitney Houston come out to present an award, I thought she looked good however when she started to speak it seemed kind of obvious that she was either really nervous or she was on something, lets hope for Whitney's sake that it was the first option.
Throughout the evening there were some ok performances, such as the "Rap Pack" which includes; Kanye, T.I., Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne, who were also joined by the very pregnant M.I.A. who sang the intro to her mega hit Paper Planes. The legendary Stevie Wonder sang with the Jonas Brothers which had me shaking my head the whole time.
The Punk-Rock Trio that Is Blink-182 made their way out to present an award and made the announcement that they are coming out of their five year hiatus and will not only record a new record this year but will also be touring come summer time. It will be interesting to see how successful their come back will turn out with Tom Delonge already enjoying modest success in his new gig Angels and Airwaves.
Overall the highlight of the evening would have to be the duet of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss who took home four Grammy awards for their great album "Raising Sand", Plant who has had a busy year turning down offers to be in the Reunion of his former band Led Zeppelin really found his niche with his counterpart Krauss. It was nice to see the two rack up a few awards that they truly deserved over their competition, maybe the Grammy committee will continue with this and award people/bands/groups who are the best not the ones who are most popular.
