With Thanksgiving coming to an end, it is now time for the annual four week shopping craze that leads us all to Christmas. During the next two articles, there will be two lists of great music CD's from both the past and present that will hopefully get you in the mood to go out and buy some music for a loved one. This article will emphasize on the music of the past.
1. "Harvest" by: Neil Young- An album that is arguably Young's most successful and popular. With a polished Country/Acoustic vibe, Young sings about self realization and the troubles of finding true love in someone else. "Old Man" which happens to be one of the best tracks from Harvest is about a relationship with an older ranch owner whom Young sees himself turning into later on in life. Young is one of the greatest story teller's of all time so that makes this album a necessity for any music enthusiast.
2. "Are You Experienced" by: Jimi Hendrix- While only prominent for about four years due to a drug overdose, Hendrix was able to climb up and claim the notion as being one of the best guitar players of all time. Experienced depicts Hendrix at his very highest point on that journey as the riffs heard here are not found anywhere else in the music world. Hendrix's guitar playing abilities may have been unreal but he also was able to hold his own when it came to singing. That very fact can be found on one of the albums best tracks "May this be Love" as Hendrix's guitar is tuned down so his sly vocals can tell the story amply.
3. "Dark Side of the Moon" by:Pink Floyd- Often referred to as the greatest concept album of all time, Dark Side garnered the boys of Pink Floyd their most commercial success. While having a very basic arraingnment of lyrics, it is the presentation that makes this album one of the best ever. The pinpoint selections of the varied instruments along with the many noise/voices found here allow for a very mellow, moody/psychedelic feel. This became the calling of the band. "Money" is a track with a sense of irony which found the band singing about the evil's that may come along with obtaining money.
4. "The Joshua Tree" by: U2- This album by U2 was the one that catapulted them into American music stardom. It was their second straight album to hit it big in the states, which in essence made everyone get rid of the sophomore slump notion. Joshua Tree started a twenty year and counting domination of the music scene by Bono and the boys from Ireland. "With or Without You", is one of the finer notes from the album as U2 is usually at its best when Bono's weeping voice is complimented by the Edge's elegant guitar work.
5. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by: The Beatles- This late seventies masterpiece was the definition of the music scene as many bands were toying around with pop and psychadelic vibes but none of them could pull it all together like the Beatles could do. In their ten year existence the Beatles were able to produce classic after classic, yet there were two albums that really were able to stick out more so than all the others. Sgt. Pepper's was one of those two as was the later work titled "Abbey Road". While Abbey Road was more of a group effort, Sgt. Pepper's saw Paul McCartney take the realm as group leader. With that being said, John lennon was an integral part of the record as he gave out two memorable performances with "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" and also "A day in the Life". The album still is recognized as one of the greatest albums ever but what do you expect when it comes from the greatest band ever.
