A recent comment on this an earlier post led me to come back to update this topic. For those interested in this story of Bill Sizemore, the Oregon initiative pusher, here's a link to Judge Wilson's rather detailed findings and order.
If you've ever wandered the streets of any of our big cities, I imagine you've seen hustlers play three card Monte. It's a simple scam. A quick-handed and entertaining guy shows three face cards. I always saw two black cards and one red Queen. He would challenge passerbys to throw their money into a pot. A couple quick shuffles, and if you could track the red Queen, you took the pot.
He would often work with one or more shills in the crowd who would "win" a hand to show how easy it was to get rich. And when the real money came down, the hustler would make quick work of losing the red Queen through a series of sharp card The mark would never win.
I offer all this because the complexity of the arrangements that Judge Wilson relates looks something like a game of the three card Monte.
