The latest report from the New York State Department of Health on the influenza situation outside of New York City shows a dramatic increase in visits to hospital emergency rooms for flu like illnesses in Upstate New York. The October 24 report shows nearly a 50% increase in such visits from the October 17 report. The Hudson Valley and Long Island regions show a much smaller increase.
Erie County and Buffalo had the highest number of cases upstate during the spring wave of Swine Flu. They were followed by Onondaga County and Syracuse. It appears that these two areas are again experiencing heavy flu activity and the Albany area northward has joined them.
In the week ending October 24, there were 148 hospitalizations in New York outside of the City for flu. 84 of these patients were age 24 or younger. Positive tests for influenza A that were reported increased from 276 on October 10, to 632 on October 17, to 2006 on October 24. Of the 27 samples that were subtyped at the NYS laboratory, all were H1N1, or Swine Flu.
