Friday, December 5, ushers in seventy-five years of the Repeal of Prohibition, the celebrated 21st amendment poured alcohol back into the glasses of American adults. The most fitting place in Cleveland to order a "cold one" has to be a charming micro brewery and restaurant in Ohio City, Great Lakes Brewing Co.
The infamous Untouchable Eliot Ness is well known for his fight during Prohibition to keep the likes of Al Capone and his cohorts from distributing illegal "hooch" to the sober masses. What may not be common knowledge is that he was a regular patron of the pub now occupied by GLBC when he was Safety Director in Cleveland. In fact, local lore has it that small holes in the wall behind the bar are from a Ness related shoot out.
Their award winning Eliot Ness lager is a tribute to the defender of evil that would "lift one" with his pals in GLBC's popular spot. It's warm and casual here and they'll even shuttle you to home games. Try a beer sampler of their other star brews with an order of the warm barley pretzels or hearty artichoke crock.
They offer a full menu with hearty appetites in mind. The filling and tasty sausage sampler, open pot roast sandwich, Bratwurst with housemade pierogi's and chicken pot pie are some items reminiscent of Ness's era. A beer recommendation is offered with most menu choices. Don't leave without having the bread pudding for dessert. There are two banquet rooms if you want to plan your next party or meeting.
Repeal Day is not in the list of national holidays. Across the country millions of spirit loving grown ups will raise their glass in salute of their right to do so. Ness's persona is one of a hard fighting, fearless defender of Prohibition. When thinking of him sitting around at Great Lakes Brewing Co.'s former self I get the feeling that he was just a truly exceptional guy doing his job.
