There have been over 1 billion apps downloaded from Apple's Applications Store. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you probably have at least one from the Health and Fitness column (at least if you are reading this you do). If you do not have an iPhone or iTouch, buying one may be a great investment for your health.
There are hundred of applications that range in price from free to $20. Regardless or price, all beat the cost of a personal trainer anywhere. The programs however rival some of the top information you would be getting if you were working with a professional one-on-one. Here are some of the best apps that you can download for free!
Trainer Lite: This program offers 3 separate running/walking workouts. If you are using an IPhone, the program also tracks your speed and distance. However, it allows you to play your own music. A trainer speaks over the music every 1, 2 or 3 minute intervals telling you to run or walk. Based on your level of fitness, the program provides 18-22 minute runs. Advanced runners can simply make this workout more difficult by running slow during the walk portion of the workout and run fast during the "run" intervals. RunKeeper: For runners who want to keep track of their progress, this app offers plenty of options for storing stats on the duration, distance, pace and speed of each run. It also uses a built-in GPS to conveniently map and record running paths. Users love that it was developed by a fellow runner, and that it uses a web-based history tool so they can monitor how much they’ve improved over time. This does not work on an iPod yet though which is why I have not reviewed it myself yet but have heard great things! (source)
321 Run Lite: Again for runners, this app has many different workouts that include a couch to 5K 8 week plan, Lose 10 lbs in 10 Weeks, Train for a Half Marathon and a series to learn how to run faster! The program also keeps track of distance and is great for anyone who hates running a steady pace.
Nike Training: This is a great app for strength training using minimal equipment. The exercises are shown via video so an internet connection is a must with this app but the workouts change daily and gives you a plan for each week including rest days!
