At just 32 years young, Brittany Murphy died this morning reportedly from cardiac arrest. Extremely thin and quirky, Murphy was surrounded by rumors of drug use and eating disorders. Now lies the question, were drugs and/or an eating disorder the alleged cause for her heart's failure?
This summer Michael Jackson died from a cardiac arrest as well. Drug use was later ruled the cause of his death.
According to TMZ.com Murphy's mother found her in the shower unconscious around 8 AM at a residence listed as belonging to Murphy's husband.
In 1995 Murphy starred in "Clueless" as the awkward teen in the early 90's. After the turn of the millennium, she revealed her new skin and bones like figure and a popular boyfriend, Ashton Kutcher. Her career seemed to be on a high note but her weight was a bit of a scare for fans. Was this a sign of an eating disorder? Was she too thin?
She also seemed to have some erratic behavior. This caused speculation of an addiction to cocaine. She denied both repeatedly.
Accomplished singer Karen Carpenter was also just 32 years old when she too died of a cardiac arrest. It came as a direct result of the damage she did to her body battling anorexia.
The pressures of Hollywood have become too much for many young stars who often take comfort in popping pills to keep their weight down.
However, eating disorders present a variety of health repercussions. The abuse and stress that eating disorders place on the body may cause the person's heart to just shut down. Between laxatives and diuretics, you rob your body of nutrients that it needs to survive. Frequent vomiting will cause your heart muscles to cease to function properly. Even eating disorders that do not result in obvious and significant weight loss, such as bingeing without purging, or eating only what one has a specific craving for, will compromise one's health.
It has not come out that Brittany's death was caused by an eating disorder, but one can only imagine without the pressures of Hollywood would Brittany still be here?
