Injuries when you are exercising can be devastating. Even a small injury can keep you on the sidelines and out of the yoga room for weeks. The best way to remain healthy in your yoga class is to work with in your ability.
Keep your ego in check. Don't compare yourself to others when practicing. There are always people in the room who are more experienced than you. Some people are more flexible or stronger genetically. So, when you see that twisty ballerina doing amazing things-- don't compete. Just so what you can do, and be satisfied that you are giving YOUR best.
Another way we are injured in yoga in through inappropriate adjustments from inexperienced yoga teachers. This happens more often that you might think. Yoga teachers are human too- and sometimes their ego wants their students to do well... maybe too well. Injuries from yoga teachers pushing students into postures they are not ready for- are common. The best way to avoid this is to ask the teacher not to adjust you. If you have an injury (old or new) tell your instructor. This will avoid any misunderstandings and potential injury. You don't have to be rude to the instructor, but you can approach the teacher before class if there is time and gently remind her you would prefer not to be "adjusted or assisted" in the postures. If there is not an opportunity before class, if the teacher approaches you durning asana, simply whisper "no thank you- I prefer not to be assisted". Believe me-the teacher will you be grateful for your honesty, and will happily more on to another student who is eager for her help.
