Happy Memorial Day!
Many yoga studios close or offer limited schedules on holidays like today. I always advocate a home practice- though practicing at home can be difficult due to all the distractions being at home offers.
To successfully manage these issues you need to create a "yoga space" both in your house and in your head. Here are some tips: For the "house space": Move the furniture if necessary to make room for your mat. Wear your favorite yoga clothes. Turn the air conditioner OFF so you can be warm as you start to sweat. Turn off your phone. Ask family members or room mates to allow you the time needed. Put the pets outside of the room or the house to ensure they stay away. (yes, yes dog yoga is all the rage-but the truth is they are too much of a distraction) Turn down the lights a little to soften the eyes.
To create the "head space" play music to drown out all the background noises that might potentially draw your attention.
Practicing yoga with music is great fun. Most people don't have a selection of "yoga music" or find the songs they play aren't conducive to the mind space of yoga. I have a large selection of yoga music and have been mixing both popular music and yoga music for practice for many years. In this post I have included a music list you can purchase from iTunes. The playlist is just over an hour long and is listed in order- from sweet warm up- to sweaty work out, finishing with warm-down and savasana. I think you will like it very much and hopefully it will be helpful for you and your home practice. Enjoy!
