The climate in Houston’s yoga community is electric! Yoga studios seem to be popping up everywhere and those that were already established are moving, expanding their schedules or changing teachers. This is the right time for you to feel better in your skin, manage your time, release stress and to practice your yoga.
You already know I am a big promoter of keeping a home practice and doing “yoga homework” as a supplement your in-studio time. I also think It is a great idea to keep an emergency “yoga kit” in your car for those times when you suddenly have an opportunity or a hankering to take a yoga class when you are out and about. I am cant count the number of times I get an opening in my schedule- maybe traffic isn’t what I expected- or a meeting is cancelled and I am caught out, wanting to go to yoga- but without my gear. If I am too far from home- I cant go.
A “yoga kit” is easy to put together. Throw a bag in your trunk stocked with a few yoga essentials that will take you there with ease. This can be as fancy or as bare bones as you want, but a good rule is to keep it simple. You need some (clean) yoga clothes including some “after yoga shoes”. Too many yogis confess to feeling silly walking around in spandex and Jimmy Choos.
If you know you are going to be chilly or sweaty after class toss a tee shirt in too. Of course you need your mat, maybe a clean towel and a bottle of water. If you toss a “power bar” type snack in a zip lock bag it won’t melt on your clothes and you‘ll have proper fuel in a pinch. I always stock a few electrolyte powder packages to mix with water for hot yoga practice and last but not least… a twenty dollar bill. (Some studios don’t take credit cards)
With clothes, fuel, a towel and a tiny bit of cash stashed away in my car I know in Houston no matter where I am I am not far from a yoga class. And more importantly… I am ready to relax!
