Halloween is an age old custom and, when researched, is rich with traditions. Most importantly is the social aspect of traditions such as Halloween.
Dressing up in costumes, attending parties, walking couples with children roaming neighborhoods are part of the modern day celebration. Children are brought into this tradition before they have any idea what they are really doing other than pleasing the wishes of their parents. Soon the costumes and rituals become embedded in us much the way the seasons are. Then as adults we find ourselves dressing up for the cocktail party, the office celebration, and we see witches, fairies and other oddities at our bank or other stores.
Deeper , there is a benefit to this custom. It is one where we can, in a sense, be something other than our selves. We can disappear into the persona of the costume and, if for only a moment, play a little of the role and be free of the social conventions that we unknowingly adhere to. It can be a reasonably health psychological release. This is especially true in our city.
Haloween is an opportunity to enjoy our social framework with a relaxation not found in other holidays.
Tips:
1.Be creative and try not to rely on "ready made" costumes.
2.Reach into your childhood for ideas of who or what you want to portray.
3.Be careful with overly ghoulish or repugnat costumes, even though it is pretend, you are conveying a message to others.
4.Try to be aware if you are going to be around people with serious mental health issues or who have recently
suffered a dramatic trauma ( Wounded veterans, recent accident victims and so on.)
5.Let humor be your standard and enjoy yourself.
6.Moderation is both drink and behavior. (Use you constume power for good, not evil)
Have a safe and enjoyable celebration and a Happy Halloween.
Remember in San Diego we often have visitors from across the border bringing their children over to enjoy our tradition. Please be good hosts.
