The replay of Cameron Tatum’s injury was not for the squeamish. The athletic sophomore forward writhed in pain on The Summitt after he rolled and contorted his ankle while fighting for a loose ball.
The injury occurred with just over one minute to go in the first half of UT’s resounding 79-53 victory over South Carolina on Saturday. But what initially appeared to be a season-ending injury is now reported to be a significant sprain, but amazingly nothing is broken and no permanent damage has been done. Tatum experienced significant swelling over the weekend and was expected to undergo an MRI today.
Tatum did not make the trip to Nashville today, but he may still join the team tomorrow.
The outing against the Gamecocks was Tatum’s 5th game since returning from his suspension for his role in the New Year’s Day traffic stop, which resulted in the arrest of he and three other Vols. Prior to his injury Tatum had averaged 4.5 points and 2.25 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game since returning from suspension.
Tennessee’s trip to face the 22nd ranked Commodores on Tuesday (7pm EST on ESPN) is the beginning of a difficult two-game road excursion. On Saturday the Vols travel north to Lexington to challenge the 3rd-ranked and once-beaten Kentucky Wildcats.
