Do your children's summer plans consist of playing video games, spending hours watching movies and eating cotton candy at the amusement park? If these type of sedentary activities take up most of your children's day it's time to step in and teach them the importance of exercise. Gaining unhealthy amounts of body fat and losing cardiovascular endurance is not something they need to go back to school with next year.

Many kids don't see the fun in exercise. They might be the slowest on the team and be discouraged by sports. But only trying football, baseball,  soccer and ballet may be limiting their athletic horizon. What about family sports in the backyard? They are less intimidating then joining a new team and can also reap benefits of involving everyone on the household. Some examples of these sports would be wiffle ball,  badminton, biking, roller blading and volleyball. They each require minimal equipment that can be found at your local sports equipment store.

Teach your children the importance of a exercise and fitness by having a family competition. Take 3 activities that you all enjoy and measure your level of ability at the beginning of the summer and the end. An example would be to run/walk for 1 minute. Each person tests separately and begins at the same starting point. Pick a route that each will follow once it's their turn and time the run/walk for 1 minute. Record the results and measure again in 4 weeks. Make a plan of action as to how you will increase your distance for next time. For example, how often per week you will run/walk together in order to improve performance for next time.

Keep yourself and your children fit this summer with activities involving lots of movement. Enjoy the outdoors and work hard to achieve your goals.
