Stories have been circulating all day that comedian Katt Williams was arrested this morning on burglary charges while on location in Georgia shooting his current movie.
Reports surfaced that Williams, best known for comedic roles in “Friday After Next” and “Norbit,” was jailed in suburban Atlanta after police arrested him for breaking into a home and stealing roughly $3,500 worth of jewelry and collectable coins on Sunday night. Subsequently charged with burglary and criminal trespassing, Williams, 38, has since posted bond and has been released.
Why on earth would Katt Williams stoop to the point of breaking into a personal residence to steal cash and coins? Was it drugs, mental illness, a dwindling bank account? Although Williams has been in trouble with the law the past several years related to various weapons charges – even as his star continued to rise – his lawyer insists the comedian was actually a guest in the home in question, and that the entire incident is the result of a dispute with an employee who lives in the guesthouse.
Attorney William Briggs told TMZ that Williams has been in Georgia working on a film and had been staying on the property of Barry Hankerson – a personal friend and one of the movie’s producers – for several weeks with “full permission” to be there. According to police reports, Daniel Broach, one of Hankerson’s employees living in the property’s guesthouse, reported Williams broke into the home (using a crowbar to gain entry), stealing several items. Briggs claims there was beef between Williams and Broach, and the “vengeful” Broach reported a “faux” burglary.
Williams is out on bond, but he’s no stranger to peculiar behavior – we’ll just have to wait and see if he really went there. Stay tuned.
