Routine testing for salmonella detected a possible contamination in Del Monte brand cantaloupes, and prompted a voluntary recall by a northern California grocery store chain, announced on October 18th.
What is Covered by the Recall?
Del Monte brand cantaloupes sold in the associated stores between October 5th and October 16th. Some 1,120 cartons of cantaloupe were recalled.
All remaining affected cantaloupes were pulled from shelves on the 16th, so any fruit still for sale should be safe, and no other types or brands of fruit were included; thus there is no reason to avoid any fruit purchases, especially given the importance of fresh fruits during the winter months.
Which Stores are Included in the Recall?
Raley's, based out of Sacramento, California, and their associated stores, Nob Hill Foods, Bel Air, and Food Sources stores, including locations in northern California and Nevada are the stores who issued this voluntary recall.
According to the AP release, shoppers with questions should contact Raley's Consumer Affairs, 1-800-925-9989, or e-mail them at feedback(at)raleys.com.
Is Salmonella Testing Improving?
This is one of several recalls in the last few months in which salmonella was detected and food recalled without any reports of illness. Officials hope that this will become the norm, and widespread illness from contaminated food will become a thing of the past.
