That steady breeze you've been feeling, my fellow New Yorkers, is not the Wind Chill Factor. It is the late, great Daniel Patrick Moynihan spinning in his grave.
The man who wrote "Beyond The Melting Pot;" rebuilt Washington, DC's Pennsylvania Avenue; served as US Ambassador to the United Nations and New York's senior US Senator has been replaced, once removed, by a woman who stands for everything he did not!
No pun intended, but Gov. David Paterson's choice of upstate Congresswoman, Kristine Gillibrand, is not only near-sighted, but quite frankly, it's dumb!
Democrats and liberals have been flooding the Guv's switchboard and e-mail account in protest of Gillibrand's appointment.
Among her exploits, Rep. Gillibrand used racism and fear in the anti-immigration debate to win votes; voted against the Wall St bailout, (last time we checked, Wall Street was STILL in New York); remains a strong advocate for the National Rifle Association (NRA) and has strong anti-gay beliefs.
Rumors out of Albany say that Gillibrand, an ultra-conservative Dem who ran a nasty primary and general election campaign to win the Poughkeepsie-arear seat, was hand-picked by New York's senior Senator, Chuck Schumer...NOT by Paterson.
Schumer reportedly believes that the Democrats needed an upstate Democrat to shore up the 2010 election. But, as written in this space previously, surely Chuck knows that a Democrat need only carry New York City and Erie County (Buffalo) to win the seat in a general election.
Gillibrand can expect payback in a nasty primary campaign herself, with no less than Andy Cuomo, Manhattan Borough Pres Scott Stringer and US Rep Carolyn Maloney already talking challenge. Maloney was a contender for the seat.
As junior Senator, Gillibrand replaces Hillary Clinton, who used Moynihan's seat as a propulsion rocket to The White House/ Foggy Bottom.
