A US Airways plane that took off from LaGuardia Airport a little more than an hour ago is now completely submerged in the Hudson River. This follows a crash landing at 3:31 pm Eastern of Flight 1549 originally headed for Charlotte, NC.
According to WNBC TV and the New York Times, all of the passengers survived the crash and were quickly moved by commuter ferries and police to safety.
"As far as we believe, there is no one on board," an official at the scene told WNBC reporters.
Sources say the plane may have hit a flock of birds before the pilot announced to passengers and crew to brace themselves for the crash.
One witness on the ground told WNBC reporters he saw the plane descending steadily without its landing gear down.
A NY Waterways boat and police divers dropped into the water from helicopters helped passengers escape the wreckage. Many passengers were seen on live TV reports freeing themselves from the submerged plane. Many passengers were submerged in the Hudson's frigid 20 degree waters.
The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey has set up a family center at the Crowne Plaza Hotel near LaGuardia.
