What a week it has been for Princess Caroline of Camelot!
Caroline Kennedy started the week still an icon. She was still the only survivor of a tragic family. Still known around these parts as a generous philanthropist who just may have saved the city's Board of Education!
She's ending this week, though, as if she were one of her shadier cousins...like Will K. Smith, who almost went to jail for an alleged rape; or Cuz Michael Skakel, who was convicted of murder; or poor Cuz David, son of RFK, who died alone, in a seedy motel, of an overdose.
This week the mayor of Syracuse questioned her abilities, experience and how much she knows about the state? The mayor of Where?
At least Ms. Kennedy has lived here for most of her adult life. Can we say the same about Hillary Clinton? What did she know about the Empire State prior to her anointing to the Senate by the New York State Democratic Party?
Back in the day there was a man named Joe Crangle. Joe, albeit a strange dude personally, was once one of the most powerful Democratic power brokers in the nation. He also happened to be chairman of the Erie County (Buffalo) Democratic Committee and a close Kennedy confidant.
If Joe were still alive, politically speaking of course, he would no doubt tell the princess to stay out of places like Syracuse and Rochester...they are insignificant in this thing or ours. Crangle would tell her that all she needs to win in 2010 is Erie County and the five boroughs of New York City.
So, Alec Baldwin, the mayor of Syracuse, and all of you small market reporters who are trying to make a name for yourselves by attacking Caroline Kennedy can go stuff it!
Caroline, darling...listen to Liz Moynihan, the widow of the late, GREAT Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan. She knows how to do this thing, and I would bet you a dozen chicken wings from Buffalo's Anchor Bar she would give you the same advice that old Joe Crangle would. Which also begs the question...where have you gone Joe?
