Following Saturday's list of celebrities who became politicians from our Tri-State area, as promised, here is a brief list of pols who morphed into celebs. Again, I'm sure I've left out a few, so please feel free to add to the list:
Tim Russert - the late great Buffalo Bills #1 fan and host of Meet The Press. Began his career as a pol working for the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and former N.Y. Gov. Mario Cuomo. One of my personal heroes, so he gets top billing
Edward I. Koch - the "howmydoin'?" former Mayor never met a camera or microphone he didn't like. Following his City Hall tenure, Koch hosted a nationally-syndicated radio show; also appeared in several sit-coms including "Different Strokes," Spin City," and several hosting gigs on SNL
Susan Molinari - former Congresswoman and daughter of Staten Island power broker Guy Molinari. CBS found her good looks to be enough to hand over the weekend gig on the CBS Morning Show in 1997; turned out America wasn't ready for her. She resurfaced in the presidential campaign as a GOP mouthpiece on cable
Jeanine Pirro - former Westchester County District Attorney. Ran a brief campaign against Hillary Clinton; her alleged wiseguy, two-timing hubby killed her political career. However, her tough-chick routine and stunning good looks eased her into her current gig - a t.v. judge
Star Jones - made her bones as an Assistant Brooklyn D.A; analyst for NBC during the O.J. trial - the first one; parlayed that into "The View," a 100%-sponsored wedding, a 100% sponsored weight loss plan, her own show on Court TV, a divorce -- well, you know the rest
Curtis Sliwa - the crime-fighting founder of the Guardian Angels is, and has always been, a shameless self-promoter. I know he's not a real pol, but has had plenty of influence as a policymaker over the years; morphed his near-death experience at the hands of the Junior Gotti crew into a mildly successful, syndicated radio gig. Honorable mention to his ex-wife Lisa Sliwa, his former crime-fighting sidekick. Lisa engineered her gig as Curtis' crime-fighting sidekick into a modeling career, TV news reporter and radio show hostess
Carl Stokes - former Cleveland Mayor became the first black anchorman in New York City on WNBC; later was appointed as Ambassador to the Seychelles by President Clinton; was arrested twice for shoplifting in the 1980's
