My piece on Fran Drescher yearning to take Hillary Clinton's place was good for me. I received a lot of hits -- I took a lot of hits. (See Fran Drescher for Senator Schmenator)
Some derided me for picking on the former Nanny star while not picking on other celebrities who've run for office. They pointed to the usual suspects: Ah-nold, Franken & Reagan.
So it got me to thinking about other celebs-turned-pols from our Tri-State area. Here's another list...some have served, some have failed. I know I've left out a bunch, so feel free to add any names I've missed.
Howard Stern - ran for Governor in 1994. Dropped out when he discovered he would have to release his finances to the public
Bill Bradley - former New York Knick great not only ran for President, but served as U.S. Senator from New Jersey
Al Franken - blah blah blah
John Hill - founding member of the band Orleans; now a Congressman from Upstate NY
PT Barnum - yeah, the circus/sucker born every minute dude. Ran for Congress in Connecticut and lost
Norman Mailer, Jimmy Breslin, William F. Buckley, Jr - I put them all together because I'm running out of room. All ran for Mayor of NYC. All lost
Gore Vidal - ran for Congress in NYC. Lost, despite the support of Paul Newman
Bobby Richardson - Yankee 2nd baseman; 1960 World Series MVP. Ran for Congress in South Carolina. Lost. Became born-again and coached Jerry Falwell's basketball team at Liberty University
Now for some reason Buffalo, NY has sent an inordinate number of former athletes to elective office:
Jack Kemp - former star QB for your Buffalo Bills; served as a Western NY Congressman, ran for President; ran for Vice President with Bob Dole. Made "supply-side economics" famous. Had the hair thing going on WAY before Gov. Blogo
Anthony Masiello - former Buffalo Mayor and State Senator; played one season with the Indiana Pacers
Billy Stachowski - South Buffalo State Senator; big star at Holy Cross College; also makes a mean kielbasa on Dingus Day
Joe Mesi - Boxer turned politician. Was K-O'd last month in his run for State Senate
