While police in Nassau County continue the search for the animals who trampled a man to death on Black Friday at the Valley Stream Wal Mart, we ask ourselves, "How does something like this happen?"
Following the death of temp worker Jdimytai Damour and the accompanied video of the crowd on the info superhighway, we heard everything from racist accusations to blaming Wal Mart for the attack. Now that's the holiday spirit I was looking for!
According to reports from sources both reliable and shady, poor Mr. Damour didn't stand a chance when people, also referred to as "savages" by one witness, ran the guy down, stepped on and over him on their way to buy $29 vacuum cleaners. When some of his fellow temp workers went to help them, they were stepped on as well. Later, with police on the scene, the New York Daily News reported that shoppers were furious that this man's death by stampede kept them from their appointed "biggest shopping day of the year" rounds.
As I checked around myself, the word was there was very little, if any security at the Valley Stream store when it opened at 5:30 a.m. If you watched Wal Mart's holiday blitz ads we were assured that they have plenty of checkout lanes now with more employees to help you pay for your deals...security, however, is apparently left to the retired cops and schoolteachers that Wal Mart hires to check those reciepts!
Wal Mart can't be too upset, can it? First of all, the death brought a lot of attention to the sale items. All reports from AP, CNN, Reuters and the local New York press all mentioned Wal Mart's sales on HDTV's at $585, Bissel vacuum cleaners as low as $29 and other great bargains. Nothing like free advertising!
Wal Mart will also probably cash in on Mr. Damour's death in another insidious way. The company was exposed a few years back as one of those non-union shops that hire unqualified and unskilled workers to perform dangerous tasks. Wal Mart, in turn, takes out life insurance on these employees. Not to protect the workers' families in case of death or dismemberment; but to ensure that Wal Mart cashes in on the poor slobs' deaths.
Mr. Damour was a temporary worker, so it is unclear whether Wal Mart gets to file a death claim. But, please, Wal Mart shoppers...if you feel something lumpy under your feet next time as you charge the store to save 10 bucks....PAY ATTENTION!
