Fast and Furious racing game for the iPhone

Driven to find a fun game for the three-day weekend?

Why not a racing application? Fast and Furious: The Game (by Digital Bridges Limited t/a I-Play) was released on 4/2/09 and costs $1.99. I tried out the “test drive” version first (free; released 6/22/09).

Here’s what the developers promise players: “Dominate the underground street racing scene as you blast through the streets of L.A., Mexico, and the Dominican Republic! Make it across the border to win. Challenge thousands of opponents in the various multiplayer modes. If you lose, you’ll lose more than your ride!”

Here are some of the game’s features:
  • WiFi multiplayer mode;
  • 7 game modes: Road Race, Drift Race, Drag Race, GPS Race, Tunnel Run, Pursuit, and Evade;
  • 36 different vehicles to choose from, including performance cars, sports cars, and imports; and
  • Ghost racing, through which players challenge other drivers’ time by downloading their ghost from the leaderboard.

When you win a pink slip race, your opponent’s car is added to your “garage.” But don’t get too excited, because when you lose the next game (I speak from experience), the car can be swiped right back out of your garage.

Once I got the hang of it of “the handling,” I was emboldened. Perhaps a little too bold, apparently, because on a few occasions, I tilted the phone, er, "car",  too far forward and found myself driving upside down.

The graphics of the first level looked a little bit more like the stretch of Highway 280 on the Peninsula (with a few palm trees added) than Mexico, L.A., or the Dominican Republic. But the graphics were pretty impressive for a free game.

And it’s addictive. Although I’m getting better at avoiding the railing and shoulders, I have yet to drive it home.
