While I've always been a fan of the area around the Bluebird Theater, in the last few years, that section of Colfax has positively BLOOMED! You could spend an entire day hanging out within a few blocks- for example:

8 am: At Hooked on Colfax, get yourself  a cup of joe named after one of their neighbors like the Mezcal Mocha or the Atomic Cowboy plus a tasty pastry or breakfast burrito to start the day off right. Take a book or your laptop (Free Wifi!), sit near the window or out on the patio and watch the wacky world of Colfax whiz by.

10 am: Fully caffinated, head over to the 'Culture-Plex' across from East High School. Formerly known as the Lowenstein Theatre, this gorgeous 50's era theatre is now home to one of the best record stores in town, Twist and Shout, THE best bookstore in town, Tattered Cover and the best new cinema in town, Neighborhood Flix, where you can snack on ginger glazed sweet potato fries and a beer- or even eat a full meal- while you watch a movie! Yum!

1 pm: If you didn't already give in to the lure of Neighborhood Flix's menu, take an appetite building walk up to Steve's Snappin' Dogs. They've got a creative menu of toppings for the dogs, great Blue Bunny shakes AND because they have veggie dogs, garden burgers and flash-fried veggies, they create a fast food experience that vegetarians like myself rarely get! I HIGHLY recommend the Veggie Dallas Dog- smothered with veggie green chili and cheese.

2 pm: More shopping!! West of Hooked on Colfax is a lovely little block with wonderful shops- like The Fabric Lab where you can get a new look, with locally made fashions,  Plastic Chapel featuring collectable toys for grownups and The Shoppe which has treats to eat AND handmade crafty treats to buy!

5 pm: The best part about this 'hood is the variety of food-

  • Tommy's Thai has been around way longer than the current boom, with good reason
  • Mezcal puts a good twist on traditional south of the border fare (and has killer drinks and a great patio)
  • Bastien's is a trip back to the fine dining days of the 50's. Fabulous food, white tablecloths, vintage cocktails and one of the most unusual buildings in Denver.

7 pm: The Bluebird has shows most any night of the week, the Pink Elephant has Bingo on Thursdays and Burlesque all weekend long, you can hit the 70's era dance floor at Rockbar and there's lotsa great bars to whet your whistle, like the PS Lounge, Atomic Cowboy and Sengers on the Fax.

10 blocks, and a full day.
