As reported across the board by sites ranging from Stereogum, Pandora to Redefine Magazine, after an interview in Entertainment Weekly, the number one Owl City hit "Fireflies" and its sound-a-like resemblance to The Postal Service is something even the band can hear. In a world of lawsuits over song ripoffs a la "This is It", should a band be admitting they might have taken someone else's sound?
Cited on the Stereogum site, Adam Young has said in the EW interview that the uncanny resemblance of Fireflies is pretty similar.
From EW interview:
I've become more of a fan having started Owl City, actually. I had some friends in high school that would have it playing in their cars and stuff. It was cool, but it never really caught my ear. It's kind of ironic, looking back at it, because a lot of people do relate the two projects. I can totally see it now, but I didn't really then, for what it's worth.
So is all this worthy of the internet uproar? So some of the material has the same sound, don't most bands do that? Granted I'm more of a Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service fan but I don't really see the need for all the attention this got today online.
Just sayin'.
