A man jailed on charges of kidnapping and assaulting the mother of his child was out on probation for assaulting the same woman, officials said.

Today, Kershaw County served Travis Jerome Stewart, 31, with a warrant for probation violation at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, officials said.

Mr. Stewart was charged Monday with burglary, kidnapping and assault and battery with intent to kill and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature for the Oct. 28 incident, officials said.

The assault happened just under two months after Mr. Stewart was released from prison.

Mr. Stewart serrved a year for two counts of criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature as well as assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, said Mr. Josh Gelinas, spokesman for the S.C. Department of Corrections.

"He just got out," Mr. Gelinas said.

Mr. Stewart, who has a criminal record that extends more than a decade, was also placed on five years probation for the charges, officials said.

But Mr. Stewart's arrest for last week's incident means an end to his probation.

Sheriff's deputies said a man forced entry into a 30-year-old woman's home last Wednesday and severely beat her. The man then dragged the woman from her home and forced her into his car, Mr. Lott said.

But as the man drove away, the woman grabbed the steering wheel and caused him to wreck, Mr. Lott said. The woman fled and was able to get into a bystander's car. The man then fired several shots at them as they fled, the sheriff said.

The woman was treated by officials with Richland County Emergency Services for her injuries.

Richland County Sheriff's deputies and agents with the State Law Enforcement Division arrested Mr. Stewart without incident at 43 Maingate Drive, in Northeast Richland County, Mr. Lott said.

Mr. Stewart is awaiting a bond hearing in General Sessions court before being transferred to Kershaw County on the probation violation charge, officials said.
