Today I"ll do an overview of select major Art Basel satellite fairs.
Scope I always consider Scope a "must-do". Quirky, but will not aggravate the senses.
Art Asia The new kid on the block reflects a heavy trend towards young Asian superstars. Some rising quickly from the art schools to International names by collectors/gallerists stampeding to the source of new and inspirational ideas. Proceed with interest.
Red Dot Art Fair This fair is moving to the midtown Miami complex in Wynwood for it's 3rd year. This 26 acre site used to be the old Buena Vista Rail Yards, a blighted spot until midtown exploded from it recently....changed the area plenty.
Bridge Worth a "go" over the last two years, this 3rd year expands to Wynwood, augmenting the Miami Beach venues: the vintage Catalina and Maxine Hotels. Though uneven in content, tromping through the hotel rooms from Miami Beach's first heyday proves a treasure hunt for art patrons.
Design Miami Though a more commercially-minded bent for the week, none-the-less you can't dispute the import of design in the creative world. Past years anted up Zaha Hadid, lecture and product...quite a coup to hear her discuss the exuberant nature of the works.
ArtMiami The Grande Dame of the old Miami art '"scene". "The only culture you can find in MIami is in the yogurt.......haw, haw.", was a big joke for many years. Art Miami was the sole annual outpost in an arid landscape of leathery skinned retirees til the worm turned (on both the over-tanning ritual and the cultural scene) and Art Basel blasted through the sunstroke barrier. ArtMiami morphed with the times and should prove to be a great visit in it's 19th year on the map.
Pulse The selections at this fair always appeal to me. Art is subjective, but put Pulse on the front burner. Ignore me at your peril.
Okay, now I bet you're hungry. Since a good deal of the satellite exhibitions are in Wynwood, I will make sustenance my next priority. Keep your eyes out for my listing in the next installment.
