Prostitution and gay marriage are rarely in the same conversation, presumably because gay couples are far too busy corrupting your children to be bothered with paying for sex. In the same week that the world of unattractive Asian women was turned upside down by a Rhode Island prostitution ban, the briefly-fabulous state of Maine joined ranks with progressive cultures like Iran and Saudi Arabia in banning gay marriage. Single men in Rhode Island may not think that either of these current events has anything to do with them. Taken at face value, that’s likely true – wise single men aren’t apt to get married to each other, and prostitution is generally dominated by married men trying to thwart the neutering efforts of their wives. But in politics, nothing can ever be taken at face value.

Supporting government legislation against prostitution and gay marriage is an endorsement of government involvement in people’s private sexual lives. Last week, the people of Rhode Island and Maine decided to turn over to the government the authority to make consensual sexual agreements, and consensual lifestyle arrangements. With such authority, will they stop there? There are segments of our society that believe that divorce is an evil institution and should be banned. Should the American people stand aside and allow the government to enact legislation dealing with that aspect of their lives? Further still, if marriage is such an important building block to society, at what point can citizens draw that line and determine that despite the controls that government already has, that it would not at one point have the power to force people into marriage?

The benefits of marriage have been well-documented. Even though most of these studies are fake, most “science” argues that married people live longer and are happier than their non-married counterparts. Is it not possible, nay likely, that at some point big brother might step in and threaten the single way of life? Wouldn’t it be ironic if your vote against prostitution or gay marriage now paved the way for other relationship controls in the future?

Christian sects – long the beneficiary of tax-exempt status – always have extra money lying around to waste on social issues. If the Religious Right becomes aware of the debauchery that single men engage in, would they not funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars away from their various charities to fight for mandatory marriage? Not likely? The Bible indicates that humans should be fruitful and multiply, yet some of us remain unfruitful and mathless. If you can truly foresee no possible future where some preacher doesn’t stand up and say, “single men are an affront to the Lord and a danger to your children,” then go back to your normal life and forget all about this. But remember – these same people believe in a cosmic zombie who not only cares about their meaningless lives, but is also edible and tastes good with wine.

Get out and vote. A vote for prostitution isn’t only a vote for your hobby – it’s also a vote to protect the love lives (or lack thereof) of yourself and everyone you know. A vote for gay marriage isn’t only a vote for assless chaps, but it’s a verification of the rights of people to live however they want. The greatest advantage to being single is freedom. Let’s spread that freedom around.
