Many Denverites don’t know that the hero of the galaxy is in their own backyard.
Sitting quietly at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum is a T-65 X-wing Starfighter, which destroyed the Death Star. Actually, it’s a replica to the one in the Star Wars movies. What’s cool is that you get to see what one would actually look like had you been riding with Luke Skywalker. His helmet sits on the nose and R2-D2 is secured in his hold behind the pilot.
The Starfighter is owned by Lucasfilm Ltd., but was built in Germany. It was one of several created to commemorate the launch of the special editions of the earlier movies in 1997. Each replica weighs some 5,000 pounds. When it’s not traveling to exhibitions, Denver’s Starfighter lives at the museum.
It’s surrounded by some of America’s most lethal fighters. So how would it stack up?
The Starfighter can carry concussion missiles, proton torpedoes and laser canons. The F-4 Phantom, from the Vietnam era, can carry an array of weapons from air-to-air missiles to guided nuclear bombs. The Starfighter has a hyperdrive while the Phantom has afterburners. The Starfighter has a deflector shield while the Phantom, well, pours black smoke out of its twin jet engines.
In the atmosphere, I’d give the nod to the Phantom. It’s just so tough. Space? Forget about it.
